Sawwit: Engaging Artists for Civic Engagement

Poster design by Daliash Ammar

In Fall 2020, Al-Bustan is engaging artists to create works that encourage civic engagement among Arab Americans and other communities.

We commissioned Palestinian American artist Daliah Ammar to create a series of bilingual posters featuring portraits of diverse people while highlighting the need to participate in shaping the future of our city and country.  These posters are being distributed in neighborhoods across Philadelphia and shared digitally across the country.

We also commissioned videographer Dave Tavani to create a bilingual PSA interviewing various community members in Philadelphia, to be shared locally and among organizations in the National Network of Arab American Communities.

We are partnering with Spiral Q and West Philadelphia artist Brian K. Bazemore to collaboratively create artwork with community members during a series of public events held in West Philadelphia.

During the month of October 2020, we are displaying these produced works at Al-Bustan's Hub, and will continue to engage community members with public events held outside our space at 3645 Lancaster Avenue, raising awareness about social/racial justice issues and the need to vote and be civically engaged.
