Announcing Al-Bustan's Next Chapter

فصل جديد في البستان

Rooted in Arab arts and language, Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture serves our community through artistic and educational programming that enriches cross-cultural understanding and celebrates diversity. Under Founder and Executive Director Hazami Sayed’s leadership, Al-Bustan has grown from a cultural summer camp for children to a thriving organization that offers a variety of innovative programs for students, artists, and all Philadelphia community members who are interested in learning more about the richness of Arab culture.

After 18 extraordinary years, and tireless dedication to Al-Bustan’s mission, Hazami has decided to transition from her role as Executive Director. Guidance from the Board of Directors and Al-Bustan’s dedicated staff and team of artists and educators will enable a seamless continuation of our programming. Hazami will continue in her role until the end of 2020.

Transitions like this are important moments for any organization. They provide an opportunity to reflect on growth and impact, while making space to look forward with fresh eyes and optimism. Hazami’s initial vision to develop a creative and supportive environment for her young Arab-American sons in the wake of 9/11 has blossomed into a team of five full-time staff members, along with a dedicated group of teaching artists, educators, and volunteers who implement innovative programs, including: in-school arts education, community concerts, groundbreaking public art projects, and hands-on cultural experiences in the new Lancaster Avenue Hub. Additionally, Al-Bustan has developed a number of digital education experiences, which are more important than ever as we navigate the uncertainties of public life amidst the global pandemic.

I’m grateful to the many people who have helped Al-Bustan grow – to my family and the amazing staff members, community members, teaching artists, guest artists, board members, volunteers, funders, and participants who have believed in our mission and contributed to this journey over the years since 2002. I’m heartened by the impact our programs have had in the Philadelphia community and beyond, especially among youth whom I’ve seen grow into mature young adults. I look forward to Al-Bustan’s next chapter with a new leader.   - Hazami Sayed

Al-Bustan’s Board of Directors recognizes the critical nature of this position and is committed to thoughtful succession planning. To that end, we have identified key qualifications for potential candidates as part of the organization’s strategic planning process. NOTE: The position has been filled as of October 15 and announcement of the new ED will be made soon.

We are grateful to all who have contributed to the growth of Al-Bustan over the years and participated in our programming. We look forward to many more engaging years.

—Board Chair Omar Harb, on behalf of Al-Bustan's Board of Directors
