About the Artist
“My name is Johara and I am a Palestinian organizer and tatreezer based in Philadelphia. I started my tatreez journey as a child, learning it from my mom who was a professional tatreez artist that designed and embroidered thobes when we lived in Palestine. I grew up watching my mother and grandmother design and stitch beautiful motifs onto their clothing garments. After October 7th, I revisited Tatreez and it became a way for me to connect with my roots and keep me grounded during this genocide. I found joy in doing Tatreez again and teaching it to others to preserve this artistic form of resistance and Palestinian identity.” - Johara Shamaa
