Raï'na Workshop with Esraa Warda

  • Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture 3645 Lancaster Avenue Philadelphia United States (map)

"Raï'na " meaning "Our Raï" is a dance empowerment weekend foregrounding the intersection of 1) pedagogy of Algerian Raï dance and 2) interpersonal connection & storytelling. In Arabic "Raï" literally means "opinion" but in the musical genre, it refers to the singer's blues. In Algeria, it carries a rebellious spirit; it is a form of visceral storytelling, pushing societal boundaries around gender, sexuality, and public expression.

In Raï'na dance workshop led by Esraa Warda, participants learn the fundemental movement vocabulary and rhythms of Raï dance coupled with creative activities to stimulate joy & storytelling amongst community. We will fiercely express "Raï'na" or "Our Raï" through movement and art and end the two days with a completed choreography.
