FUN TIMES
ARABIC
Teacher Brahim El-Gabli incorporates a variety of activities – reading, writing, conversation, and games – themed around the life and contributions of Ibn Al-Haytham in the 45-minute daily Arabic language class.
MUSIC
Musicians Hanna Khoury and Hafez El Ali Kotain teach campers Arabic songs and rhythms during the first week of camp, ending with a music recital on Friday afternoon.
SCIENCE
Teacher Michele Dixon guides campers in a variety of experiments and nature walks, applying the scientific method and exploring aspects of light as campers learn about the contributions of Ibn Al-Haytham.
ART
Teaching artist Tremain Smith works with campers to create Arabic alphabet books and an alphabet quilt using manuscripts from Ibn Al-Haytham’s Book of Optics.
DRAMA
Teaching artist Justin Poole leads campers in a series of skits themed around Iraqi daily life and the story of Ibn Al-Haytham.
POETRY
Guest artist Ibtisam Barakat guides campers in two days of poetry workshops exploring aspects of their identity.
TEEN PROGRAM
Teen campers sing and play instruments during music, create shadow puppets and drama scenes of Iraqi life, learn Arabic daily, write insightful poems, and create a video called “Faces of Iraq” with teachers Katherine Toukhy and Pam Winkler.
PERFORMANCE
On the last Thursday of camp, a wonderful performance showcases all the campers’ talents and creativity, ending with a reading by author Ibtisam Barakat.
