Poetry at Al-Bustan Camp 2009

We invited Palestinian-American writer, poet, and educator Ibtisam Barakat to lead poetry writing workshops for two days at camp. Through a creative process of reflecting, writing, editing, sharing and collective performance, the children and teens expressed an aspect of their identity or something that is dear to them.

Here is a selection of poems by Jabari, Lucas, Badr, Freda, Reem, Jude, Saria, Hadeel, Laila, Rosalie, Isabelle, Samir, Ray, and Hadi:

and you can see photos of their poetry-in-the-making. . .

Reflections by Students at Moffet School after Naomi Shihab Nye’s visit, February 2009

Singing her song,
all about chickens.
With her lovely hands
strumming the guitar.
Her deep voice.
Singing her song,
All about chickens

her hair to her style
her voice to
her song
how she presents
herself I love her
and her poetry
her supplies
and what she says
she’s
not a
star
But she’s a Poet
a
talented Poet
