Due to the recent inclement weather, the new start date for the Arab Percussion Workshops will be February 20th
This winter, Al-Bustan is offering percussion workshops taught by Hafez El Ali Kotain in addition to the Arab Music Ensemble led by Hanna Khoury. Depending on number of sign-ups, there are opportunities for youth and adults.
Arab Percussion Instruction for Youth
Workshops are held Saturday afternoons at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia, located at 4014 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104
Age: Beginners/Intermediate: 3rd-12th graders & college students
Date: February 6 – March 20, 2010 (seven Saturdays)
Time: 1-2 PM or 2-3 PM, depending on number of students and skill level
Fee: $105 ($15/workshop, limited scholarships available for youth, inquire for application)

Hafez El Ali Kotain is an accomplished master percussionist, fluent in both Arab and Latin rhythms. Born in Venezuela of Syrian heritage, he grew up in Syria until the age of 16. He began playing the doumbek at the age of seven, made his first stage performance at age nine , and went on to study with master Syrian percussionist Hady Jazan, winning the regional percussion competitions in Syria for five consecutive years. In Venezuela he studied drumming at the TMV Institute for Music in Valencia, where he also taught a percussion style blending Arab and Latino music. Since his residency in Philadelphia, he continues playing Arab percussion, singing maqam, and performing with a variety of musicians. Hafez has taught percussion with Al-Bustan the past three years.
