“Nahnu al-Amal / We Are the Hope” Exhibit at University City Arts League
October 30 – November 4, 2009, gallery hours 12 – 8pm
Opening Reception and Art-Making: Friday, October 30, 5-7 PM
4226 Spruce Street in West Philadelphia
Join us for an opening reception of artwork by young artists who participated with Tremain Smith in Spring 2009 workshops that integrated Arabic letters and words into encaustic painting. Inspired by Barack Obama’s message of hope and change during the presidential campaign, students chose to create a collective piece that says “Nahnu al-Amal” or “We Are the Hope” in Arabic. Each person chose to represent either “Nahnu” (“we are”) or “al-Amal” (“the hope”), using a variety of media and techniques on wood panels.
At the reception, guests can respond to “We are the Hope” by making their mark onto waxed panels using encaustic painting techniques facilitated by Tremain Smith. These newly created collective encaustic panels will be incorporated into the exhibit. Artists of all ages and levels are invited to participate!
. . . .The reception took place and was a wonderful time of friendship and art-making. Five panels made collectively are now hanging in the gallery. Please have a look at some photos. . .
Al-Bustan thanks University City Arts League for graciously hosting the workshops in Spring 2009 and presenting this exhibit in their gallery. We are also thankful to the Chace Fund for funding the workshops.
