On May 19, 2009 musicians of all ages gathered at Girard Academic Music School (GAMP) School to present An Evening of Arab Music, the culmination of Al-Bustan’s music education program this year featuring Palestinian composer and musician Simon Shaheen. This concert brought together young and adult musicians and their directors and families along with community members, to enjoy a wonderful repertoire of Arab-Jazz fusion music and traditional classical Arab music. Participants and their music directors included:
- William Penn Charter High School Jazz Band – led by Hayley Varhol
- Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble – Marc Johnson
- Pennsylvania Girlchoir – Jodi Bohr
- Al-Bustan Percussion Ensemble – Hafez El Ali Kotain
- Al-Bustan Music Ensemble – Hanna Khoury
- GAMP High School Jazz Band – Vincent Rutlandt
We are so pleased that young musicians could meet and hear each others performances. A big thank you to Mr. Shaheen for joining us via conference call in the auditorium, and for inspiring the students to experiment and broaden their music experience. And we are most grateful for the gracious hospitality of vice-principal Dr. Jack Carr and music director Vincent Rutlandt of GAMP School.
