Shaheen leads two-hour workshop for teachers and musicians

On Wednesday, November 19th, almost 100 music teachers from public and independent schools filled a room in the Kimmel Center to learn the art of Arab music.  The workshop, presented by Al-Bustan and co-sponsored by School District of Philadelphia and Kimmel Center, was led by Simon Shaheen, internationally renowned composer, educator and musician.  Shaheen began his workshop with an overview of the history of music in the Arab world.  Shortly thereafter, he was demonstrating rhythm and maqam, or modes, by playing the ‘ud and showing the teachers how to clap on the up and downbeats.

The workshop was both educational and fun.  I have been listening to Arab music my entire life, but without formal study.  Hearing improvisational music played in different maqam was a new educational experience for me.  I finally understood the complexity behind Arab music’s ability to emotionally elate and elevate its listener.  The microtones create a very emotional sound, from happy to sad, and encompassing everything in between.  I also learned about the rhythmic patterns in Arab music and how the same rhythm can sound very different when played in a different maqam and melody.

Simon Shaheen led a wonderful workshop.  He has a strong presence and a command over his audience.  When he improvised on the ‘ud everyone in the room was captivated.  At the end I watched the teachers walk out of the room smiling and chatting about their educational experience.
